Blessing of the bees

An ancient Irish tradition being once more created in a church in North Dublin

The ceremony was facilitated by a tidy towns committee in Phibsoboro who saw it more as a heritage event. The ceremony is where Benedictine monks splash holy water over the hive. The priest recites a devotion that the Benedictine monks use to pray.

Committee member Gerard Meany said: “At one point, nearly every house in Ireland would have had access to a beehive, as it would have been the only source of a sweetener and wax would have been used for candles.

“It’s the fist time I’ve heard it done in modern Ireland. There’s a lot of folklore attached the bees, so it’s nice to keep that going.”
